Across our coastlines, there’s a growing movement built on a simple idea: what we take from our waters should find its way back. From oyster shells to restored shorelines, conservation efforts across the country are proving that small, intentional actions can lead to lasting impact. Up in Virginia, that idea is being brought to life through the Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program, led by the VCU Rice Rivers Center.
This program is doing something powerful with something often overlooked—used oyster shells. Instead of ending up in landfills, these shells are collected, cured, and returned to the water, where they serve as the foundation for new oyster reefs. These reefs, in turn, help restore ecosystems, protect shorelines, and support marine life throughout the Chesapeake Bay.
At Toadfish, this kind of work hits close to home. Through the Toadfish Conservation Coalition, we’re proud to support efforts that put shells—and ecosystems—back where they belong. That’s why we’re excited to partner with the Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program, contributing $5,000 to help expand their impact and support their ongoing restoration efforts.
The Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program, operated by the VCU Rice Rivers Center, is a statewide initiative focused on collecting, processing, and repurposing used oyster shells for reef restoration. Working with restaurants, businesses, and volunteers across Virginia, the program recovers thousands of pounds of shell that would otherwise be discarded.
Once collected, the shells are transported to designated curing sites, where they are left exposed to the elements for an extended period. This natural process removes organic material and ensures the shells are safe for reuse in Virginia waters. After curing, the shells are then returned to the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, where they are deployed in restoration projects.
These recycled shells provide a critical resource in oyster restoration: hard substrate. In the wild, oyster larvae—known as spat—must attach themselves to a solid surface to grow. Without that surface, they cannot survive. By returning cured shells to the water, the program is effectively rebuilding the foundation needed for oyster populations to recover.
It’s a straightforward process, but the impact is anything but small.
The Chesapeake Bay is one of the most productive estuaries in the United States—but it’s also one that has faced significant environmental pressure over the past century. Pollution, overharvesting, habitat loss, and declining water quality have all taken a toll on native oyster populations and the ecosystems that depend on them.
Oysters are more than just a species—they’re ecosystem engineers. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day, removing excess nutrients, sediment, and pollutants from the water column. Multiply that across an entire reef, and the impact becomes massive. Cleaner water supports healthier seagrass beds, stronger fisheries, and more resilient coastal habitats.
Beyond filtration, oyster reefs serve as essential habitat for hundreds of species, including fish, crabs, and shrimp. They act as natural breakwaters as well, reducing shoreline erosion and buffering coastal communities from storm surge and wave energy.
But oyster reefs can’t rebuild themselves without help—especially in areas where the original reef structure has been lost. That’s where programs like Virginia’s oyster shell recycling initiative play such a critical role. By returning shell to the water, they’re not just recycling waste—they’re rebuilding entire ecosystems from the ground up.
From the James River to the York River and beyond, these restoration efforts are helping bring life back to waters that have supported coastal communities for generations. And with each shell returned, the Bay gets one step closer to recovery.
At Toadfish, our mission has always been simple: Put ’Em Back. It’s a mindset that drives everything we do—from the products we design to the conservation efforts we support. Oyster restoration has been at the heart of that mission from day one. Through the Toadfish Conservation Coalition, we’ve worked alongside partners across the country to help rebuild oyster habitats, improve water quality, and support the ecosystems that give so much to us.
So when we learned about the Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program, partnering with them felt like a natural fit.
Their work reflects everything we believe in:
Taking what would otherwise be waste and turning it into something meaningful
Supporting hands-on, science-driven restoration
Investing in long-term ecosystem health
Bringing communities, businesses, and conservationists together
Our $5,000 contribution is just one step in supporting their efforts—but it’s part of something much bigger. It helps fund the collection, curing, and deployment of shells that will go on to support new oyster reefs across the Chesapeake Bay. And like all great conservation work, it’s not just about one organization or one effort—it’s about collaboration. Programs like this rely on a network of restaurants, volunteers, researchers, and partners working together toward a shared goal. We’re proud to be part of that network.
The work being done by the Virginia Oyster Shell Recycling Program is a powerful reminder that restoration doesn’t always require reinventing the wheel. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as putting shells back where they belong. At Toadfish, we’re honored to support that effort through the Toadfish Conservation Coalition and to stand alongside the team at the VCU Rice Rivers Center as they continue to expand their impact across Virginia’s waterways.
With continued collaboration, growing community involvement, and a shared commitment to protecting our coasts, the future of the Chesapeake Bay is one worth investing in. Because when we put shells back, we’re not just restoring oyster reefs—we’re restoring the health, resilience, and beauty of the waters we all depend on. And we’re just getting started. #PutEmBack
