Why Oysters | Toadfish Outfitters

Water quality is the #1 issue of our time. The number of people living on the coast has increased by 40% in the last 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. With the population increase, the amount of toxic runoff from coastal cities and towns has increased 10-fold, placing an unprecedented amount of strain on coastal resources.

Oyster reefs are the perfect solution to poor water quality. They help protect and clean shorelines, filter water and provide habitat for both their primary residents and a range of other wildlife. Sadly, oyster populations have declined 85%-90% of their historic levels because of over-harvesting, pollution, and habitat destruction over the past century. But rebuilding shellfish habitats is one of the most promising opportunities for reviving coastal ecosystems, and states’ investments in oyster reef restoration have yielded results in recent years.

The "Put 'Em Back" mantra comes from the goal of recycling all oyster shells so they can be reintroduced into the water, where more oysters will eventually grow. Baby oyster larvae, spat, float through the water looking for places to settle and attach so they can eat and grow. Baby spat are highly attracted to the chemical composition of old shell and have a much higher survival rate if they attach to another oyster shell as opposed to a dock piling. Without these old shells — and without high populations of oysters producing new shells — there are just not enough suitable places left for baby oyster spat to attach. Therefore, it is important to recycle oyster shells because they are the best surface for the spat to grow and they help restore oyster reefs

Toadfish is on a mission to help change the tide on coastal water quality, with every purchase made Toadfish is committed to replanting oyster beds throughout the country. We do this by supporting our conservation partners by purchasing shell, oyster spat, creating recycling programs & locations, and more. Let's all do our part and work together to preserve this beautiful world for generations to come.

Let's Put 'Em Back!

Toadfish is committed to cleaning coastal water by replanting new oyster habitats across the country. Oysters are the centerpiece of healthy saltwater ecosystems. They filter toxins from the water and provide nursery grounds for hundreds of marine species. The more oysters we plant the cleaner and healthier our coasts become.

Be a part of the Put ‘Em Back® movement and donate to oyster restoration today!

All funds collected will go directly to our non-profit, Toadfish Conservation Coalition, where it will directly support oyster shell restoration programs nationwide. Let's all do our part and leave this world better than we found it.
